Allenspark, Lyons and The Peak to Peak Area
As you drive up the canyon to the village of Allenspark and Scenic Peak to Peak area you’re struck by the untouched beauty of the Saint Vrain Rivers and tributaries that feed them. The rivers together with the stunning mountain vistas leave you wanting more. You might even be touched with the desire to protect the beauty and become a steward of the area as many are who reside in these mountains!
Opportunities abound for those who love the out-of-doors. Everything from mild day-hikes along beautiful rivers, blue ribbon fishing, cross country skiing, technical climbing and scaling the fourteeners, is available here. The scenic Peak to Peak By-Way is a stretch of highway designated by the State of Colorado because of it unique beauty and character. It stretches from Estes Park (Highway 7) through Nederland (Highway 72), all of which are within a 1/2-hour’s drive from Allenspark. Along this scenic by-way is access to Rocky Mountain National Park, Roosevelt National Forest, Arapahoe National Forest and the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area. The surrounding mountains are dotted with jewels of towns that have unique historical significance. Some of them have now taken their place in history as ghost towns. You’ll find stimulating conversations in the cafes, post office, and churches, or if you prefer peace and quiet, you’ll find it here, too.
Our small mountain towns are becoming bedroom communities for many who work in the Boulder-Longmont area. It is a relatively short commute (35 minutes to an hour), and is a welcome respite for the previous city dwellers.
The town of Lyons is just down the mountain from Allenspark and is known as the “double gateway to the Rockies,” offering access to Estes Park through Hwy 7 and Hwy 36. It is a thriving mountain community with close proximity to shopping, malls, restaurants, and other conveniences. Lyons has a character of its own with ample outdoor opportunities, bluegrass music culture, local cafes and shops, the red sandstone industry, and the surrounding St. Vrain river.
